Down at the Beach (Hamauri) is a festival for girls. It is called
the girls' (Dolls') Festival in mainland Japan.
Down at the Beach (Hamauri) in central Tokashiki is held on March
4th, and at Aharen on March 3rd, each following the lunar calendar.
For Hamauri on Tokashiki the residents gather at Tokashiki Harbor,
each bringing a delicious dish for the block party. On that occasion
Haari (Dragon Boat Race) is held, sponsored by Tokashiki Village
Athletic Association. For Hamauri in Aharen people go by boat to
the small island "Hanari Island" which is located just across Aharen
Beach. The residents bring delicious homemade dishes for the festivities.
